Self Tying: being one with rope (Air)
Wed 2 Oct 2024 6:30 PM - 11:30 PM BST
Anatomie Studio, SE152JR
Description
People are brought to self-tying for a multitude of different reason. Whichever is yours, this class is meant to help you gain some fundamentals for your personal rope journey. We will explore a few techniques, building up a sequence and opening up to your own exploration, while weaving in valuable elements of theory to tie it all together (pun intended).
What does this workshop cover?
The class is about the first step in self-suspension, and will touch these topics:
-Hand dexterity
-Hip harness
-Safety rules of thumb
-Uplines (high and low lockoffs)
-Attachment points: ankle, thigh, futomomo
-Body energy levels and strength
-Chest harness variations
-Creating a simple leg swing
-Thinking about rope jams
-“Weaving” rope tying technique
While we’ll aim to touch each of these topics, the level of detail and variations will depend on the specific people participating, as the teaching will be to some extent tailored on the participants as well.
Who can come to this class? Are there pre-requisites?
-Being able to tie quickly and comfortably a single column tie.
-Awareness of your body in rope, the ability to check for nerves and blood issues.
What should I bring and what do I wear?
We have a communal kitchenette, fridge and microwave, so feel free to bring lunch/snacks. Tea and coffee are free. People usually wear comfortable clothing like yoga or dance attire. We advise against loose fitting clothing and also jeans can sometimes feel a bit restrictive to move around in and difficult to tie on. We have communal ropes if you don't have your own.
Who teaches this class?
This workshop is taught by Kaoru Neve.
Kaoru Neve started practicing shibari in 2016 on a journey of self-discovery and connection. Rope provided a language to express technique, feelings, creativity, and contact in a structured way that could be shared and learned safely and incrementally. Her style is very curiosity driven: at times experimenting with connective, dynamic, messy rope, at times exploring precision, aesthetics, and beauty.
Kaoru is one of the Anatomie House Cats that help with the Studio. She loves teaching as a way to empower people to find their own style and pursue their own motivation, as well as a way to give back to a community that gave a lot to her.
Kaoru brings to rope an aesthetic sense based on the principle of “form follows function” as well as over a decade of experience in teaching complex topics and connecting across disciplines. She gives particular care to the learning approach of the student and how the teacher can support the individual style and exploration, allowing it to blossom.
“We're each of us alone, to be sure. What can you do but hold your hand out in the dark?” ― Ursula K. Le Guin
