The Body Speaks - Self Tying Weekend with Burgundy Rose

Sat 7 Feb 2026 11:30 AM - Sun 8 Feb 2026 5:30 PM GMT Anatomie Studio Arch 113 / Unit 17 Station Passage, SE15 2JR

This is a 2 part weekend workshop - you can book into one of the days only or participate in both days. There are individual tickets for Saturday and Sunday and a combo ticket for the full weekend offered a slight discount.

Saturday February 7th

🫶 The Body Speaks: Self-Tying
"I'm not so interested in how they move as in what moves them” — Pina Bausch

This workshop will explore the art of self-tying and how to build expressive and embodied solo scenes on the ground. It will deep dive into the why behind the ropes we tie — to evoke different feelings, desires, eroticism, pleasure, pain — and create a space to bring these to the surface.

The workshop will cover:

  • Self-tying fundamentals: fluid rope handling, body movement, secure anchor points and efficient frictions

  • Safety: Risks, anatomy and self-consent

  • Body awareness: Exploring sensation, movement, breath and tension as tools to connect with and listen to your body

  • Creativity: Developing both freeform rope skills and structured harnesses for personal expression and aesthetics.

💡 Who can come?
This class has pre-requisites. These are: knowledge of a single column tie, openness and curiosity. All levels from beginner to more advanced practitioners are welcome as the workshop will explore a toolkit of techniques and principles that can be adapted to different skill levels.

Sunday February 8th

🫶 The Body Speaks: Self-Suspension
"I'm not so interested in how they move as in what moves them” — Pina Bausch

This workshop will explore the art of self-suspension and how to build expressive and embodied solo scenes once uplines and gravity are involved. Participants will learn techniques to take themselves safely into the air, and we will create a range of positions and transitions to play with and adapt according to your unique style, skill, desires and preferences.

The workshop will cover:

-Self-suspension fundamentals: efficient and fluid rope handling, securing uplines to harnesses and hard points, managing energy
-Safety: Risks, anatomy and self-consent
-Body awareness: Exploring sensation, movement, breath and tension as tools to build proprioception and understand where your body is in the air
-Creativity: Finding your own style, adaptions and movement quality.

💡 Who can come?
You don’t need to have self-suspended before, but should be comfortable creating uplines and already know some suspendable harnesses. The workshop will explore a toolkit of techniques, principles and progressions that can be adapted to different skill levels.

📝 Note:
Self-suspension is demanding on the body and energy levels so please stay hydrated, eat a good brunch before arriving and have light snacks throughout the day.

👥 Who teaches this class?

Burgundy Rose (she/they) is a rope switch, facilitator, performer and self-suspender interested in using the body as a tool for expression. Since 2016, they have had a broad education in Japanese kinbaku/shibari, and their personal style is influenced by their training in theatre, circus and contemporary dance.

Burgundy Rose found shibari through an interest in BDSM and started learning at Anatomie Studio in London. Since then, they have learnt from an extensive range of international educators and collaborators. Dynamic, playful and attentive, they are curious about the body and thrive on the intensities – both physical and psychological – that rope can bring out.

In 2019, Burgundy Rose was awarded a ‘Developing Your Creative Practice’ grant from Arts Council England to spend a period of time exploring rope, dance and physical theatre where they trained with Jasmin Vardimon Dance Theatre Company (JV Intensive) and with Arnoys Nicolas, a rope artist in Brussels. They also trained on the degree programme at Circomedia, a circus school in Bristol, specialising in aerial hoop.

Burgundy Rose is currently most inspired by blending the intensity and aesthetics of ‘traditional’ Japanese shibari with a more movement-based and deconstructed ‘contemporary’ style. Their shibari teaching and creative performances have taken them across the UK and international scene.

👚 What to Bring & Wear

You’ll have access to our communal kitchenette with fridge, microwave, and tea/coffee facilities — just bring your own lunch or snacks (we have plates and cutlery available).

Wear something comfortable and easy to move in, like yoga or dance clothing. Avoid restrictive clothing like jeans. You can change in the venue.

On Saturday, please bring at least 4 ropes and safety shears.

On Sunday, please bring at least 6–8 hanks of rope, safety shears and a swivel if you have one and would like to spin in the air (optional). Please note you can use our communal rope but we may not have enough for everyone. Our communal rope is not recommended for suspension lines as it gets a lot of wear and tear.
