[Advanced] Kinky Breath Play in Rope — With Pen and Gala

Mon 31 Aug 2026 11:30 AM - 5:30 PM BST Anatomie Studio Arch 113 / Unit 17 Station Passage, SE15 2JR

🚨 This workshop will be about understanding how breath comes into play in rope, and how to play with airflow to intensify your scenes. See below for details on pre-requisites and see here for our class levels explained.

👉 Our events deal with adult themes. You must be 18+ to join.

🪢 About the class

Many of us affect breathing in rope to some extent, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Even something as simple as a waist rope, or a chest wrap in a harness, can influence how someone breathes.

For those who enjoy incorporating this into their play and increasing intensity, how many of us truly understand the mechanics of breathing? How many of us feel confident in taking a precise, intentional approach? How do body positioning, movement, and additional ropes change the way breathing is affected?

This workshop focuses on how body positioning can affect breathing. Rope will, of course, be used throughout, but the emphasis is on understanding the mechanics of breathing so that any interaction with breathplay is approached with greater intention and precision. We’ll explore how body positioning and rope interact, how to recognise the effects of different positions, and how observation and awareness can shape a scene.

Understanding breathing, body mechanics, and the body’s responses allows us to approach these dynamics with greater confidence, precision, and care.

The session will focus on understanding the physiology of breathing, the relationship between body positioning and breath restriction, and the role rope can play in influencing posture and movement. Along the way, we’ll also look at a few additional breathplay concepts that can complement these dynamics and broaden your understanding of this style of play.

Workshop objectives

  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of breathing
  • Understand how body position, load and rope placement change breathing mechanics
  • Recognise the body's responses, including the signs that are easy to miss
  • Explore the physical and psychological considerations of this kind of play
  • Learn how to apply this in your rope, and where the limits sit

👩‍🏫 Who teaches this class?

Pen and Gala enjoy exploring intensity within rope. However, they, do this knowing that even when playing with intensity and deep power exchange and/or surrender, they don’t want to cause harm or break each other.

Pen and Gala’s approach to this topic is simple: risk can be understood, but never eliminated. Rather than relying on rules or absolutes, we aim to give participants the knowledge and confidence to assess situations, communicate effectively, and make informed decisions throughout their rope practice.

Pen

Pen (he/him) is a bottom-leaning rope switch from the UK who loves exploring the emotions and vulnerability of shibari.

Initially, he approached Shibari as ‘just another form of bondage’, but soon realised it is something much more profound than this. Pen ties with many people with different styles, but he always falls back towards his love for power exchange and surrender. - “The worst way to torture Pen is to tie him in a way that is easy to escape..”

He has taught and performed at events across the UK, Europe, the US, and Southeast Asia. Passionate about rope bottoming education and safety, he uses his extensive training in human anatomy and physiology to empower both bottoms and riggers to explore rope play more safely and freely.

Gala

Gala Kinshinawa is a rope switch from Barcelona who began her journey in rope 5 years ago as a bottom together with her partner Vik. Over time, she became curious about the role of rigger, first exploring self-tying and self-suspension before starting to tie others.

Influenced by Semenawa and her BDSM background, she developed a unique style that combines darkness, strength, delicacy, eroticism, closeness and instinct.

Gala has performed, modeled and taught internationally as both bottom and rigger. Her recent highlights include modeling in Japan for Akira Naka and Sugiura Norio, as well as teaching both as rigger and bottom at Eurix, one of the biggest rope festivals in Europe. Together with Cath After Dark, she co-created Fem Rope Getaway, and with Vik she runs Shizen Studio Barcelona, where they focus on professional Kinbaku education and workshops and performances worldwide. She’s also starting to teach as rigger internationally with her also partner Kink Name Pending
