In this weekend intensive, Burgundy Rose invites you to explore the world of self-tying and self-suspension. The weekend workshop will take you from floor to air in the course of 2 intensive days. You can also book day one and day two individually depending on your interest (just make sure you meet the pre-requisites!).
SELF-TYING FLOW (Day 1, Saturday 17th June)
This workshop will look at techniques for developing fluidity when self-tying on the ground and in partial suspension. Burgundy Rose will explore the use of self-tying as a way of connecting to your body, exploring the possibilities of movement, flow and finding freedom within the restriction of bondage. The exercises are designed to develop your body awareness in rope, movement quality and tips for fluid and efficient rope handling.
Prerequisites: You must be able to tie a single column tie, frictions and basic harnesses.
Bring: At least 4 hanks of rope and safety shears.
DYNAMIC SELF-SUSPENSION (Day 2, 18th June)
This workshop will explore innovative ways you can play with self-suspension on a single point to create possibilities for movement, spinning and dynamic transitions. The workshop will focus on getting creative in the air, and will show you a range of suspension shapes you can play with and adapt according to your unique style. Burgundy Rose is a trained circus performer, and will also show techniques for spinning in the air for those that are interested in integrating this into their repertoire.
Prerequisites: You should be comfortable managing uplines and should already know some suspendable harnesses.
Bring: At least 6-8 hanks of rope and safety shears. Self-suspension is demanding on the body and energy levels so please eat a good brunch before arriving and have light snacks throughout the day. If you can bring some ginger (in a drink or a snack), this can help with dizziness from spinning.
About the facilitator
Burgundy Rose is a multidisciplinary artist and is passionate about using the body as a tool for expression. They are interested in exploring the boundaries of theatre, movement, rope and circus, and how these art forms can inspire each other. Burgundy Rose has been making theatre and performance work for over a decade, and has worked on projects spanning from theatre productions and international residencies, to short acts for festivals, clubs and cabaret nights.
Burgundy Rose started learning Shibari in 2016 at Anatomie Studio in London, and has learnt from an extensive range of international educators and collaborators. They are currently most inspired by blending the intensity and aesthetics of ‘traditional’ Japanese Shibari with a more movement-based and deconstructed ‘contemporary’ style.
Burgundy Rose trained with Jasmin Vardimon Dance Theatre Company (JVI Intensive) and on Circomedia’s degree programme in Circus Arts. In 2019 they were awarded a ‘Developing Your Creative Practice’ grant from Arts Council England to spend a period of time exploring rope, dance and physical theatre. They are currently making a solo show that weaves together autobiographical storytelling with rope and aerial hoop.
Their rope teaching and creative performances have taken them across London, Manchester, Bristol, Berlin, Prague, Athens, and Portland (USA).
