Sally Nicholls: Writing for a Younger Audience

About the event

This July we are delighted to welcome multi-award-winning Sally Nicholls to our Klaus Flugge Salon.

Readers will know Sally as the bestselling author of YA novels, though recently she has turned her hand to writing for younger readers with books such as The Button Book, The Very Noisy House and Godfather Death. These books are often inspired by her own life, guided by her children and seeing what they’ve enjoyed in picture books. Her latest series, following the O’Hare family, is no different, with the first book inspired by that difficult family activity of leaving the house each morning.

Little bunny brothers Jackson and Harley love to create chaos and fun in the mornings, from superhero playtimes and breakfast mishaps, to wardrobe dilemmas and toothpaste trouble... and not a lot of listening to Mum and Dad. No wonder they are always late to leave the house! Will today be any different?

Get ready to laugh, smile, and maybe even recognise a bit of your own morning routine.

Leaving the House, illustrated by rising star Ellie Snowdon, publishes in July and will be followed by Doing the Shopping in 2027.

Join Sally and her editor, Sue Buswell, for a fascinating deep dive into her picture book career, from board books right through to her reimagining of classic stories and fairytales.

The Salon will take place on Thursday 23rd July and is limited to 45 tickets. Tickets cost £8 each, which includes entry, refreshments, a copy of Leaving the House and the opportunity to have your book signed by Sally.

About the Klaus Flugge Salons

Now in its second year following a hugely successful 2025, the Klaus Flugge salons are an initiative from Andersen Press to celebrate their founder and chairman Klaus Flugge and welcome people to their offices in Bloomsbury.

These events are open to anyone who wants to meet others in the publishing industry, enjoy a glass of wine and listen to an author talking about their work. They are a celebration of all that is good about the world of children's publishing today and an opportunity to make new friends, learn about new books and discuss ideas without the toxicity of social media.

Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
