Welcome to &Piano 2025! It may have felt like a long winter, but for one night only, we'll be taking you back to colder climes with a performance deep in Dark Woods Coffee HQ - a performance of the German composer Franz Schubert's epic song cycle 'Winter Journey' (known as 'Wintereisse' in German) written for voice and piano, in an acclaimed new English translation by Jeremy Sams.
This epic collection of 24 songs tells the emotional journey of a man spurned by his lover, coming to terms with his rejection as he wanders the lonely winter world around him, and to perform it, we welcome the celebrated singer Marcus Farnsworth, who performs in opera, concert and recitals around the world. He is a former first prize winner of the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition and the Song Prize at the famous Kathleen Ferrier Competition. He studied at the University of Manchester, the Royal Northern College of Music, and is now Head of Vocal & Choral Studies at Cheetham's School of Music. Marcus will be accompanied by Artistic Director Christopher Pulleyn, on a piano provided by GSG Pianos.
Join us to experience this dramatic and emotional account of heartbreak and rejection, longing and acceptance, told through a collection of exquisitely crafted songs...
Doors will open at 6:45pm. The song cycle will be performed without an interval, lasting approximately 75 minutes, and will be expected to finish around 9pm.
