We finish this year's festival with a magical evening jam-packed with amazing music, welcoming two amazing musicians who both hail from the local area. Soprano Katherine Broderick grew up just over the hill in Saddleworth, and studied at Greenhead College, before embarking on a career as a professional opera singer. She has since won numerous awards, and now enjoys an incredible international career, performing lead roles around the UK and Europe, and has been featured on multiple recordings and radio broadcasts.
Performing alongside her is the exciting flautist and composer Imogen Davey. Imogen also grew up in Huddersfield, studied at Greenhead College, and is an alumni of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama (where Katherine also studied at). She is quickly establishing herself as a cutting-edge artist, as comfortable performing traditional solo flute repertoire as she is creating sound installations as part of her composer-performer duo snake_case for Berlin Fashion Week & Sónar Festival Barcelona.
This evening is all about heading Eastwards - starting at The Civic towards Linthwaite and up to Scapegoat Hill, with a special performance of 'Small Journeys' by acclaimed composer Cheryl Frances-Hoad - a collection of songs setting texts by Colne Valley based poet and writer Adam Strickson about specific locations around the Colne Valley. Adam will also read one of his latest poems about the Slawit SHOP! celebration of the village and it's cultural diversification over the years, alongside classical Indian dancer Sanchita Mazumdar.
We continue toward Eastern Europe, showcasing two core sonatas of the Flute repertoire that show off very different sides to the instrument, but aren't programmed in concerts very much - the punch, jazzy sounds of American composer (of Slavic heritage) Robert Muzcynski and Georgian composer Otar Taktakishvili.
We conclude reaching the lands of Persia and India with a performance of Maurice Ravel's incredible song cycle 'Sheherazade' - the name of the narrator of the epic collection of Middle Eastern Folktales '1001 Nights'. The work, like much of Ravel's writing is full of rich and sensuous musical colour and texture (originally written for orchestra, but often performed on piano), with the second song 'The Enchanted Flute' bringing voice and flute together with devised dance from Sanchita.
Music, Song, Poetry, Dance - this will be one of our most exciting &Piano events to date - a fantastic combination of the arts. Be sure not to miss this fantastic finale to &Piano 2026!
