ABOUT ART & FLASH
Each month, you’ll be introduced to a new artist and three to four of their artworks. Each artwork is accompanied by optional writing prompts, along with a ten-minute writing sprint. There is an invitation to share what you have written if you would like to.
Years of art world experience have given Anika a breadth of knowledge and a passion for exploring all aspects of contemporary art and art making as a source for story ideas.

WORKSHOP FORMAT
1st Writing Sprint: Free Rein
You are shown an artwork without being told the artist’s name or title of the piece, giving you the chance to create a story sparked by your own interpretations and associations.
This exercise lends itself to ekphrastic writing in the more traditional sense. That is, ‘the use of detailed description of a work of visual art as a literary devise’ - OED

2nd Writing Sprint: Life & Times
The name of the artist is revealed and information about their life and work shared. The prompts in this section are inspired by the artist’s life and/or the subjects that drive their work. Here we think about what inspired a piece, how and why the work has been created.

3rd Writing Sprint: Methods & Motifs
Techniques and/or repeated motifs used by the artist are explored. Prompts in this part of the workshop focus on a particular element of the work. Such as materials, scale, imagery, production, display etc Sumitra Singam’s You Need a Woman of Action Only, Isn’t It?, inspired by Kevin a sculpture by Sarah Lucas, is a wonderful example of what can be inspired using this technique.
