Junior Zoologists – Level 3: Five-Week Block
Junior Zoologists Level 3 is the next step for children who've already explored the animal world with us and are ready to go deeper. Building on the foundations from earlier levels, this 5-week block introduces bigger ideas, more unexpected connections, and a bit more challenge — while staying just as hands-on, inclusive, and welcoming as ever.
Each session brings together real animal encounters with genuinely surprising science. Children of all ages can take part together: younger ones can follow the animals, the wow facts, and the hands-on time, while older children are pushed to think harder and ask bigger questions. Colouring and quieter activities are always available, so every child can stay engaged in their own way.
Session 1 – Families, Societies and Growing Up
How do animal families work? We'll meet animals that live in huge cooperative societies, look at very different parenting strategies, explore how some animals transform completely as they grow up, and discover parasites that can take over another animal's family life entirely.
Session 2 – Fear, Speed and Danger
What happens inside an animal's body when it's scared? We'll explore the biology of fight or flight, the endless arms race between predators and prey, the fastest and slowest animals on Earth, and defence strategies that go far beyond simply hiding.
Session 3 – Senses, Touch, Sound and Silence
Animals experience the world in ways we can barely imagine. This session explores extraordinary senses — from organs that taste the air to animals that sense electricity — alongside the role of touch, the loudest and quietest animals on Earth, and how silence itself can be a survival tool.
Session 4 – Colour, Light, Dark and Deception
Why are animals the colours they are? We'll look at colour produced by physics rather than pigment, animals that glow in total darkness, and the cleverest tricks and disguises in nature — including animals that genuinely deceive one another.
Session 5 – Navigation, Architecture, Symbiosis and Weather
How do animals find their way home across thousands of miles? We'll explore animal builders and engineers, incredible journeys guided by magnetic fields, unlikely partnerships between species, and how animals respond to changing seasons and weather.
