FOUNDATIONS OF PSYCHOANALYSIS

Speech, Signifier, Letter—Alain Vanier

Saturday, May 30, 2020 at 10:00 am (Eastern Daylight Time)

We will study the difference between signifier and letter without overlooking the sign, a notion Lacan rethought at various points of his teaching. Particular attention will be paid to their relation to the act of speech and the subject of language.

Suggested readings: Lacan: Écrits: “The Freudian Thing” (1955), “The Instance of the Letter in the Unconscious” (1957); Autres écrits: “Lituraterre” (1971).

Alain Vanier is a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist in Paris, emeritus professor of Université Paris 7 Diderot, a faculty member of Après-Coup, and the author, in English translation, of the monograph Lacan (Other Press, 2000).
