Saturday, December 10, 2022 • 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Time Zone: Eastern Daylight Time (US and Canada)
This presentation will be held in a hybrid format (in-person and via Zoom).
School of Visual Arts, 133 W. 21st Street, Room 402C, New York, NY (for in-person only)
From 20th-century racist totalitarianism to 21st-century religious fundamentalism, fanaticism has been one of the gravest of our age's social ills; has psychoanalysis paid it adequate attention? Largely through Lacan's theory, we will examine the structural underpinnings of fanatical discourse and the personalities that embrace it. In the process, we will explore the function of the “Cain complex.”
Suggested readings: Freud: Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego (1921), The Ego and the Id (1923). Lacan: Le Séminaire. Livre XXI. Les Non-dupes errent, 1973-74 (for the formulas of sexuation). Arendt, Hannah: The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951); Girard, René: Violence and the Sacred (1972). Haddad, Gérard: Dans la main droite de Dieu: psychanalyse du fanatisme (2015).
