Domestic Abuse and People with Learning Disabilities: How to Spot it and Stop it

A one-hour online ARC England Lunch and Learn session co-produced by the Us Too team and delivered by expert trainer Rod Landman

If you have a learning disability you are three times more likely to experience domestic abuse than anyone else.

This workshop is co-produced with the Us Too team, a group of women with learning disabilities and autistic women with lived experience of domestic abuse. It is designed to raise awareness and develop good practice responses and preventative strategies for domestic abuse. It is suitable for anyone supporting people with learning disabilities and autistic people.

“I just wanted to be loved. I met Jack and he was lovely. He has started telling me what to do the whole time, and he always needs to know where I am, who I am with. He says he is just looking out for me. He was always fun to be with, and I want to please him, but now he says I don’t need my friends, I have him, and that’s all I need.”
Misha’s Story, ARC Us Too team

The one-hour ‘bite size’ session will cover:

  • What domestic abuse is
  • How you know domestic abuse is happening
  • The specific issues if someone has a learning disability and/or autism
  • What to do if domestic abuse is happening to someone you support
  • How to make the person you support heard
  • Your role in making domestic abuse less likely
  • How to build preventative services.

The session is a live webinar in Microsoft Teams. Owing to the wealth of the material, opportunities for discussion and questioning will be limited.
