Friend or Fake? Mate Crime: How to Spot It and Stop It
A one-hour online ARC England Lunch and Learn session delivered by expert trainer Rod Landman
‘Steven wanted friends. He did not see that the friendship he had so prized was starkly exploitative, devoid of reciprocity and instrumental in obstructing his relationships with those who would have safeguarded him.’
Steven Hoskin Serious Case Review
Many supported people are befriended by those who go on to exploit the trust placed in them. This includes everyday abuses of ‘borrowing’ money and phones, through to social media grooming, sexual exploitation, cuckooing and gang involvement. This has led to people losing their independence, financial, physical and sexual abuse... even murder.
This Lunch and Learn session draws on nearly 20 years of experience derived from the ARC Safety Net project. It is designed to raise awareness and develop good practice responses to mate crime.
It is suitable for anyone supporting people with learning disabilities and autistic people.
The session covers:
- What is mate crime?
- What makes people vulnerable?
- Indicators of mate crime
- Managing risk – principles of joint risk enablement.
- Supporting people with capacity who may make ‘unwise’ decisions.
- ‘Responding to mate crime’ toolkit
- Learning from Safeguarding Adults & Domestic Homicide reviews
- Safeguarding responses
- Mental Capacity
The session is a live webinar in Microsoft Teams. Owing to the wealth of the material, opportunities for discussion and questioning will be limited.
