Found in Translation: Architecture, Land, Landscape, Language
Hosted by Scotland + Venice
Curated by A Fragile Correspondence and Dualchas
Saturday 14 October 2023
Docks Cantieri Cucchini, Venice, Italy
14:00-17:15 followed by refreshments
This event is a part of the public programme supporting A Fragile Correspondence, a collateral event of the 18th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, created by the Architecture Fringe, -ism magazine and /other.
Expanding on the themes of architecture, land, landscape and language common to both A Fragile Correspondence and Dualchas's presentation in the Arsenale as well as many other presentations at this year's Exhibition, the event creates a space for dialogue between a range of different projects - all united through their interest in architecture as a social, cultural and political activity. This dialogue asks how a closer reading of land and landscape can help architecture adapt to the changing world of the climate emergency, an evolving profession, and a recalibration of what it means to practise architecture.
Through an afternoon of talks, panel discussions and debates, with a diverse range of speakers, these ideas will be explored from multiple perspectives across La Biennale. We will also be paying a visit to the Lithuanian Pavilion as part of the programmed event. The afternoon will end with some refreshments.

About A Fragile Correspondence
A Fragile Correspondence is Scotland’s contribution to the Venice Biennale Architettura 2023 – the 18th International Architecture Exhibition, The Laboratory of the Future Commissioned by the Scotland + Venice partnership and curated by the Architecture Fringe, -ism, and /other. The project explores how our landscapes are constantly transmitting information if we choose to see and listen. By re-establishing our dialogue with the land, how can we value exchange over extraction and equality over dominance? How can we create a more reciprocal connection with the land? Highlighting cultures and languages that have a close affinity with the landscapes of Scotland, A Fragile Correspondence investigates alternative perspectives and new approaches to the challenges of the worldwide climate emergency.
About Dualchas
In the Hebrides and on the mainland of Scotland, Dualchas live and work in a landscape that is sometimes harsh, sometimes peaceful, but always inspiring. They make buildings on the edges of lochs, in quiet glens, amongst woods, and on rock. These buildings have a direct connection to beaches, the sea, and mountains.
In The Laboratory of the Future, Dualchas Architects tells a story of people, place, and culture, through their collaboration with a film director, sound artist, and writer. The film describes the environment they work in, its climate, geography, and topography, using language, music, and field recordings.
The broader story of decolonisation can be understood through personal experience, through families who have a deep connection to this place and a desire to return to work and live here and to create an architecture that is appropriate to both its time and place.
Found in Translation: Architecture, Landscape, Language is hosted and supported by Scotland + Venice which is a partnership between Creative Scotland, British Council Scotland, National Galleries of Scotland, Architecture & Design Scotland, V&A Dundee and the Scottish Government.
