The Architecture Symposium: Is slow the new fast?

Embracing the value of time for a more sustainable future

In an age of acceleration, we are looking for ways to slow down. Alongside the slow food and slow fashion movements, there is a case for slow architecture that prioritises long-term environmental and social wellbeing over fast, resource-intensive construction. Time is a critical design tool that enables better relationships, deeper research and sustainable outcomes. But how can we sell the value of time to our clients? 

PROGRAM SUMMARY

Day One: Symposium
Saturday 23 May, 9.30 am to 4.30 pm, Basil Sellers Theatre, Bond University, Gold Coast

Speakers from Denmark, Belgium and across Australia explore how we can prioritise slowness over spectacle and consider opportunities to embrace deceleration in the design process.

Day Two: Tour (optional and strictly limited)
Sunday 24 May, The Warehouses (Currumbin Waters, Qld) and Lune de Sang (Federal, NSW)
Group 1: 7:30 am to 4 pm
Group 2: 10 am to 6.30 pm

On day two take an exclusive tour of The Warehouses by J.AR Office, hosted by the practice’s founder, Jared Webb. This award-winning commercial development repurposes existing industrial sheds into a resilient building designed for its flood-prone site. From there, journey to Lune de Sang, a rainforest regeneration project in the Byron Bay hinterland. Choi Studio founder John Choi will lead a tour of the collection of structures designed over the past decade by Choi Studio and Chrofi, including the Lune de Sang Pavilion and Sheds.

• Transport included. All delegates will be picked up from The Warehouses and returned there at the program’s conclusion.

*CPD points apply to the full-day symposium on 23 May. If you are an architect you can accrue 4 formal CPD points. Members of the Design Institute of Australia can accrue 6 DIA CPD points. Please note, full-day attendance is required to be eligible for CPD points. Points cannot be split.
