ARLIS South West present a Tour & Artist Talk with Carinna Parraman, Alicia Paz, and the Centre for Print Research

ARLIS South West, with UWE’s Centre for Print Research (CFPR), present a tour and exploration of an exciting showcase of work from the Centre’s staff, PhD students, and associates from the last 25 years.

The CFPR is a unique, interdisciplinary centre at UWE that unites knowledge and skills across traditional and digital techniques to develop innovative, creative solutions for the future of print. The CFPR Celebration Exhibition showcases over 25 years of diverse, pioneering work in print from CFPR staff, PhD students, and associates.

Dr Carinna Parraman, Professor of Design, Colour and Print and Director of the Centre for Print Research, will introduce the work of the CFPR and lead a tour of the exhibition in the F Block Gallery. One exciting part of the showcase is The Cabinet of Curiosities, a travelling exhibition created by CFPR Editions and Artists in Residence using new technologies to explore the intersection of traditional print, digital processes, and fine art practice. The Cabinet of Curiosities extends to work displayed in Bower Ashton Library’s vitrines, as well as colour samples, pigments, and paint charts from the CFPR archives and Dr Parraman’s collection in reel cases across the campus, which we will also explore as part of the tour.

There will also be an opportunity to listen to one of the CFPR’s Artists in Residence featured in the Cabinet of Curiosities, Alicia Paz, in conversation with Dr Carinna Parraman, whose work with the CFPR and the collections of Chatsworth House focuses on the translation of photographs into printed textiles, exploring a dialogue between painting, photography, print, and sculpture.

At the end of the day’s scheduled events, you are free to stay and further explore the CFPR’s work on display in the vitrines at Bower Ashton Library.

Dr Carinna Parraman is Professor of Design, Colour and Print and Director of the Centre for Print Research at the University of the West of England, Bristol. At the CFPR, she leads a multi-disciplinary research team of academics and technicians with a range of expertise: from scientists and technologists to craftspeople, designers and artists. Carinna is an artist and printmaker, and her practice spans the art and science of colour printing, halftoning, colour perception and appearance, historical and industrial printing.

Alicia Paz is a painter and sculptor based in London who studied MA Painting at Royal College of Art in 2008 and Postgraduate Diploma at Goldsmiths College, London in 2000. Born and raised in Mexico, before living in the US, France and now the UK, Alicia’s work is informed by her personal experience and offers a reflection on transcultural representation, particularly that of women. Through her paintings and sculptures, Alicia explores cultural hybrids, representations of family, and the complexities of kinship and lineage in a globalised world. Her work often incorporates elements from applied and decorative arts as a tool for interweaving narratives and exploring displacement and identity. Illusion and materiality, as well as ornamentation, feature strongly in her work.
