The Armagh Natural History and Philosophical Society is organising a visit to Rams Island in Lough Neagh on Saturday 21st June 2025.

Rams Island (BT28 2LQ) is located one mile offshore from the eastern shore of Lough Neagh.

The ferry will depart from Sandy Bay Marina (near Glenavy) at 10.00 a.m. and will return for 3pm. Please be at the Marina no later than 09:45.

There is a small Interpretative Centre on a barge moored at the Island. Tea and buns are available.

Ram's island is a mile long and 1/4 mile across and contains mature trees, the remains of a Round Tower, ruins of the former land-owner O’Neills’ 19th century summer house. The island jetty has a barge with tea-making facilities and toilets.

Once we land on the island there will be a Guided Tour for 40 minutes, after which there will be time to explore the island.

The tour will cover the history and biodiversity of the island, the impact of WW2, previous owners (Cardwells and O;Neills), and the lowering of the lough.

Visitors can bring a picnic, but soup and rolls will be provided, as well as tea coffee

The cost is £12.50 pp for the ferry plus a donation for tea / coffee / soup / rolls
