'From Figuration to Imagination' is designed to combine drawing from life and working from your imagination. In this way, your paintings can become more personal and reflective of you. With a maximum of only 6 people per session, get plenty of input from Chloe to support your development.
Working initially from life (people and objects), make a series of simple and expressive drawings using a range of tools. Then, loosen your grip and transform your drawings into beautiful works in oils.
Discover unusual colour combinations, experimental ways to work in oils and how time spent making numerous works can take you into a flow state of creative expression. Learn how to mix and handle oil paints and experiment with paper stocks, fabric and painting tools to achieve different results.
Find your own style and explore a world beyond representation.

We have designed a collection of three classes; dip into one, select two or join all three.
There are discounts available for booking more than one session.
Select one or more days from the following:
DAY 1: Contemporary figures in oils - please note, this class already taken place. Please select Days 2 and 3 below.
This class took place on THU 25 SEP / 10am – 3pm
Working initially from a clothed life model, make a series of simple and expressive drawings of the figure. Then develop your drawings into a range of oil-on-paper works.

DAY 2: Contemporary still lives and plants in oils
THU 16 OCT / 10am – 3pm
Inspired by a beautiful still life set-up and foraged plants, make a range of drawings on paper before turning these into experimental and expressive paintings with oils on fabric, including canvas and cotton.

DAY 3: Figures and imagination in oils
THU 06 NOV / 10am – 3pm
Either working from your drawings and paintings made on Day 1 or 2 of the course, or bringing source material with you, combine figures and found imagery to create dream-like oil paintings on canvas or cotton.

What will you learn?
- Techniques for drawing from life and collecting visual notes
- Using a range of drawing tools and materials
- Experimental techniques with oils: using mediums, colour mixing, using different painting tools
- How to make paintings from your drawings and notes
- Working on different paper stocks and/or fabrics (see individual listings)
- How to start experimenting to find your own painting style

Who are the classes suitable for?
These classes are suitable for confident beginners as well as those who would like to develop their approach to painting or try experimenting with oils. They are also suitable for artists looking to develop their painting practice. Please note that these are not a traditional oil painting classes, Chloe is experimental in her approach to oil painting and embraces a wide range of approaches.
What is included?
All materials and tools are provided, including: drawing materials, oil paints, linseed oil, range of brushes, palette knives, palettes, range of papers, latex-free gloves, rags.

Please wear old clothes.
Please note:
We will not be using white spirt or turpentine in this course as these are toxic substances. We will use linseed oil as a paint medium and a natural brush cleaner.

About your tutor
Chloe Bonfield is a UK-based artist whose multifaceted practice bridges the worlds of painting, drawing, and storytelling. Working as an illustrator since 2008, Chloe transitioned to painting in 2023, blending her foundational drawing techniques with an exploratory approach to paint. Her work delves into the spaces in between worlds, creating ghostly images that evoke transformation and reflection.

REFUND/EXCHANGE POLICY
Art Centre Penryn is a small, non-profit organisation and our courses form a really important part of our income, we are therefore not able to offer refunds within 30 days of the course date. We offer the following refund/exchange options:
If it is more than 30 days from the course start date, we can offer a full refund, less the booking fee. Within 30 days days from the course start date, we cannot offer a refund, but we could transfer you to another course, or offer a voucher for you to use to book another course. Alternatively, you could send someone else in your place, please just email us to let us know.
We're sorry, but we are unable to offer a last minute exchange within 24 hrs, or after the course, unless in exceptional circumstances.
