About the event:
Hazel Sheffield is the author of a new book Frontierlands, published in February, which follows ten UK communities occupying derelict land and buildings and reimagining them for the uncertainties of the future. One of the chapters is about Rosanna Martin, a Cornish artist who has established Brickfield, an experimental brickworks in a former china clay pit in St Austell.
The evening is chaired by Tom Ebdon, an architect, educator and PhD researcher investigating the importance of place and the potential of bio-regional materials to address the climate emergency, biodiversity loss and the housing crisis.
This is a space for conversation and curiosity: about dereliction and revival, who gets to decide what counts as waste and the practicalities of occupation and reuse by communities. The audience is invited to bring their stories of reusing waste material and reinhabiting lost or derelict spaces. Refreshments are included and the book will be available to buy.
About Hazel Sheffield
Hazel Sheffield is a business reporter and investigative journalist. Her work can be found in national and international publications including the Guardian, Follow the Money and the Financial Times. Before going freelance, she covered derivatives for Euromoney and worked as the business editor of the Independent. She left the Independent in the summer of 2016 to start a grant-funded project called farnearer.org, documenting self-organising communities and economic alternatives in the UK. After a decade of reporting, that work has come together as Frontierlands, her first book. She lives with her family in Hastings

About Brickfield
Brickfield CIC is an artist-led participatory brickworks and site
of collaborative material research based on a patch of ex china clay extraction
land on the outskirts of St Austell, Cornwall. Our focus is on transforming
waste materials from the china clay industry through making practices that draw
on the heritage of Cornish brick making, alongside sculptural ceramics and
experimental architecture. Our ongoing aim is to nurture a space of
cross-disciplinary and intergenerational research, exchange and learning.
Brickfield is run by Rosanna Martin, and a whole host of
volunteers, collaborators and partners. Rosanna is an artist, educator and PhD
student at Falmouth University. Her practice based PhD project titled Tools for
Kith Making is focused on making sculptural apparatus using regionally specific
waste materials to reframe interdependencies towards a post-capitalist future.
Rosanna grew up exploring the tidal flats of a part of the River Fal where a
huge deposit of waste china clay and mica had settled behind a spit of land,
providing a clay source for a brickworks.

About Dr Jeanie Sinclair
Jeanie Sinclair is a feminist art historian researching gender, sexuality and modernism in Cornwall. Her work uses gossip, parties and oral histories to uncover hidden feminist and queer narratives of women’s creative work, collectivism and community. As senior lecturer at Falmouth University, she develops interdisciplinary research on archives, illustration and ceramics, alongside innovative pedagogies for teaching critical studies to studio practice students.

About Tom Ebdon
Tom is an architect and educator who has spent the
past twenty years working between architectural practice and
academia. Between 2014-23 Tom’s time as Head of
Architecture was invested in establishing a new “school” of
architecture at Falmouth
University, exploring this unique geographic, social and
cultural environment through a lens of Radical Regionalism.
Tom has extensive architectural practice experience, leading his own practice from 2012 to 2020, building upon the skills and knowledge he gained working for award winning practices in London. He has extensive project architect experience working on numerous national award-winning buildings.
Tom has now turned his focus to the huge challenge of the
Climate Emergency, undertaking a full-time PhD by
design that explores the architectural tectonics of climate
action and place. This timely research seeks to explore the potential of
hyper-local, biobased materials and the new tectonics of climate
action that offer alternatives to the current defunct status-quo.

Frontierlands:
Britain’s Survival in the Making
by Hazel Sheffield
Published in hardback by Torva,
priced £20.00
eBook and audio also
available
Communities on Britain’s margins, left alone by the centres of power, are boldly rewriting the future, reclaiming and reimagining neglected land and buildings to prepare all of us for the uncertainties ahead.
'Frontierlands' are Britain's forgotten places. Silt-filled harbours, overgrown forests, sunken railway tracks and empty buildings. All once economic engines, now abandoned by investors and the state. But they are home to local communities, and amongst them, some remarkable pioneers working together to repair, rebuild and prepare for the future.
Hazel Sheffield takes her readers on a journey that begins at the coastline and travels inward via hoardings and railway arches, factories, streets and neighbourhoods to our homes. Moving from Watchet harbour in the South West to Gateshead in the North East, from Lancashire to London and the South East, she introduces us to the people who are acting to shape their own destinies - people with first-hand knowledge of the problems Britain faces and with clear ideas how to make things better.
This is a book about regeneration, reclaiming power, and the hope that comes from community action. About people questioning how the world works and determined to do things differently in the face of economic upheaval and climate crisis. People learning to build a new world, challenging us all to think about how we should live in the face of certain change.
‘This is not just a grassroots
manual for 21st century survival – groundswelling and prophetic, it could be a
startling blueprint for life in the 22nd.’ Tom Nancollas, author of Seashaken Houses
