The Ugly Duckling (LITTLE VENICE)
The Ugly Duckling by Drew Colby
Who are you?
As the four seasons of the year unfold a tiny duckling goes on a journey, only to discover that the journey’s end is…themself!
With the music of Antonio Vivaldi and Max Richter, shadow master Drew Colby explores the classic tale by Hans Christian Andersen using only the shadow of his body, light and a few simple props. A whole magical world unfolds, with a host of unforgettable characters. A moving and beautiful exploration of identity suitable for ages 4 - 10
Winner of West End Cabaret Award 2018, Best show Moving Parts Festival 2019 and Top 3 Germany’s Got Talent 2021
Running time: 45 mins no interval
Recommended for age 4 - 10
This show can be followed and enjoyed by 4 year olds, but also uses more complex ideas and concepts that older children and adults will get more out of. There is nothing really scary in this show but it does use dramatic music and lighting, for example the theatre will go dark during the performance which some children might find unsettling and the characters face some perils during the performance.
All ages are welcome at our shows and age ranges can only be a rough guide, but please bear in mind that The Ugly Duckling was not specially designed for under-fours. A show aimed at two-year olds would have some differences – those shows are carefully made to hold their attention for the duration, and not to be unsettling for them. If you do bring under fours to the show, we ask that you take them out if they become upset or distracted so as not to affect the enjoyment of the rest of the audience.
