THEATRE LaB is a creative theatre laboratory built around the process of creating an original stage work — from the first exploration to a final showcase in front of a live audience.

Unlike a regular acting course, the LaB is centred around creation. Participants become the main inspiration and creative material for the process, bringing their individuality, experience, ideas, interests, and artistic potential into the work.

Led by Juliana Berezhnaya, theatre and opera directress and educator, the process combines creative freedom with professional directorial guidance. Ideas generated within the group are gradually shaped into a clear theatrical form, dramaturgy, and artistic language.

The acting process is supported by Eleonora Shafran, actress and acting coach, whose gentle, intuitive coaching approach helps participants deepen presence, expression, connection, and performance quality while preserving individuality and creative freedom.

This combination of directorial vision and acting perspective gives the process both freedom and structure — allowing individual ideas to grow while developing them into a coherent and meaningful theatrical statement.

Course Format

  • 12 classes
  • 3 hours per session
  • Creative and rehearsal-based process
  • Led in English
  • Small group
  • Individual attention
  • Final public showcase

The first two sessions are dedicated to exploration and experimentation. Based on the group, its strengths, interests, and emerging material, the main theme and artistic direction of the LaB will be defined by the second or third class.

From there, the group moves through:

exploration → creation → selection → dramaturgy → rehearsal → shaping → performance

Possible Creative Directions

Scenes, Monologues & Duets

Working with contemporary and classical texts, scenes, monologues, and duets — exploring existing material through a new perspective.

Contemporary Dramaturgy

Discovering contemporary playwrights, new theatrical texts, and artistic languages connected to the world we live in today.

Creative Writing & Devising

Creating original material together — developing texts, scenes, situations, and dramaturgy through the rehearsal process.

Theatre & Contemporary Reality

Exploring themes that shape contemporary life and creating a theatrical dialogue with the world around us — from identity, feminism, and inequality to climate change, poverty, peace, and war.

Interdisciplinary Theatre

Combining theatre with other artistic languages — movement, music, cinema, literature, poetry, and visual forms.

Each THEATRE LaB is different. The final direction depends on the participants, the group dynamic, and the creative discoveries made during the first stage of the process.

Who Is This Course For?

THEATRE LaB is suitable for participants with different levels of acting experience who want to:

  • experience a real creative and rehearsal process
  • develop their stage presence and acting practice
  • explore their own creative potential
  • work collaboratively on theatrical material
  • gain real experience of performing in front of a live audience

The LaB can be taken in combination with AFL Fundamentals and Acting for Life: Advanced.

It is also possible to join independently if you already have experience with the core aspects of acting practice and feel ready to work towards a performance.

The most important requirements are curiosity, openness, commitment, and the willingness to create.

Final Showcase

The program concludes with a live public showcase.

The showcase completes the full creative journey — from an idea to a finished theatrical form, from exploration to performance.
