Drum & Flute Circle

Multiple dates and times The Box Arts Club, MK11 3HB

Are you looking for some 'you' time? Time to switch off from the cares of life?

Join Judy and Esmond for our monthly Drum and Flute circle. No skill or experience are needed, just a desire to relax and enjoy yourself.

Drumming and flute playing are a great way to reset our over stressed nervous systems, and build a supportive community, but mostly they are fun!

Our sessions are open to adults, they do not follow a particular belief system, or ritual basis, but there is space for personal reflection if you want it.

Drum and Flute circle starts at 7pm, but you are welcome to arrive earlier, from 6.30pm for an informal practice with the instruments before we begin.

Tickets can be booked here, in advance, but are also available on the door (cash or card welcome).

About Judy

Judy Knight worked as a Therapeutic Counsellor for nearly 15 years. Recognising that the majority of the clients she worked with, did not have a “mental illness”, but were struggling with the everyday challenges of life she decided to change her career to providing nurturing, community building, fun activities that would help people relax and reduce the increasing sense of loneliness in the modern world.

During a period of personal transformation she was drawn to working with hand drums as healing tools, and trained as a Shamanic Drum Birthing Facilitator (making drums, not attending births!). She is now dedicated to sharing the beauty of drumming through her drumming circle and making workshops.

About Es

Hi, my name is Es Shepherd, and I class myself as a glass artist and Native American Flute noodler. I have played many different instruments within many musical genres in my life, from classical through jazz to Irish showband style and folk. I bought my first Native American style flute about eight years ago, played it for a while and then stored it away.

About five or six years ago I finally attended my first Pow Wow in this country (for those who may not have heard of the term Pow Wow, a Native American Pow Wow is a gathering of music and dance to celebrate culture, in the briefest of terms. In the UK, these events re attended by people who have a deep interest in the Native American culture along with those who have Native American ancestry), after being told about them for many years previous, where I was trading glass items and hand made glass beads. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the energy that were generated by the Pow Wow drum and singers.

This was a turning point for me as I got increasingly interested in the Native American culture and music which inevitably led to me getting my Native American style flute out of storage and to start playing. The more I played the more involved I became. It was not long before my collection of flutes grew and I was teaching other people to play the flute. I also got involved in drum circles which can be spiritual, shamanic, or just a social gathering of like-minded souls who enjoy drumming and can feel the power of the drum.

I felt a little out of place initially as, although I do have a couple of drums, my principal instrument is the Native American flute but the organisers were very welcoming to the flute and, although I may be a little biased, the flute and drum go together really well. Nowadays I still create glass beads, but my time is also spent in making Native American style flutes and whistles, playing at drum circles and other spiritual and Mind Body Spirit events and other festivals around the country, and presenting workshops and talks abut the Native American flute.
