Held in Blue: A Cyanotype Workshop

Held in Blue is a hands-on cyanotype workshop led by AiR: Underground artist-in-residence Bao Nghi Ngo at Arts Mission Oak Cliff. Participants are invited to bring a photograph from their own family archive and transform it into a cyanotype using light, chemistry, and water.

Family photographs often hold more than what is visible within the frame. They carry people, places, stories, and histories that are passed from one generation to the next. Drawing from Ngo’s own use of family archives and alternative photographic processes, Held in Blue invites participants to spend time with an image that is meaningful to them and consider what happens when a familiar photograph is translated into something new.

Ngo will introduce the cyanotype process and guide participants through creating their own print to take home. No previous photography or printmaking experience is necessary.

Participants will be asked to submit one family photograph digitally before the workshop so a negative can be prepared in advance. Original photographs will not be altered or used during the printing process. Instructions for submitting photographs will be provided to registered participants.

Bao Nghi Ngo is a Dallas-based multidisciplinary artist exploring memory, family history, migration, and cultural identity through alternative photography, printmaking, textiles, and installation. Informed by her experience with a traumatic brain injury, her tactile, process-driven practice considers what we remember, what we inherit, and what changes as we carry it forward.
