Ecological Approaches to Cameraless Photography with Zoe Hamill

Join photographer Zoe Hamill for a generative day of experimental photographic image-making - all without a camera. Using the local ecology of Portobello as a basis for exploration, this workshop will explore the many ways that plants found on our doorstep can act as agents in the creation of photographic imagery. Beginning with a walk along Seafield Prom to identify and collect plant material, you will learn experimental analogue techniques such as phytograms, watergrams, and making photographic prints using your phone. The workshop will also introduce you to sustainable darkroom practices, with plants being used as developing solution.

You do not need a camera or any photography experience to attend this workshop. This is a chance to break free from received ideas about photography and instead experience the joy of experimenting with different ways that a photographic image can be created beyond a camera. 

This workshop will take place both outdoors and inside. We recommend wearing old clothes that you don’t mind getting a little messy. The Art Walk Project Space can get cold, so please dress for the weather and make sure you have plenty of layers for inside too! In the event of heavy rain, the workshop will take place inside. Seafield Prom is around a ten-minute walk from the Art Walk Project Space. We will be walking on pavements, sand and some rough ground. The nature of these techniques invites experimentation and there will be an element of trial and error, results are not guaranteed!

Please make us aware of any access requirements you have, and we’ll do our best to advise and accommodate where possible. Please be aware that darkroom chemistry is not recommended for use by anyone who is pregnant or breast-feeding, or those with asthma.

A light lunch including plant-based homemade soup, and bread is included. 

About Zoe Hamill

Zoe is a photographer from Co. Antrim, now living in Edinburgh. She is interested in the relationship between humans and the environment, as well as the systems of classification that we use to make sense of the world around us. She recently worked with Art Walk Projects on Remedy, a medicinal photo-arts community project with members of Access to Industry culminating in the creation of the new Portobello Seed Share.
