Description
Getting Into Assisting
In this session we aim to shine a light on becoming an Assisting Photographer as a career choice on entering the industry. You need a myriad of skills when taking your first steps into the industry, both in relation to technical and soft skills, assisting is a great way to obtain this all-round experience by assisting a range of different photographers. As industry experts in their field, join our AOP Assisting Photographers Working Group panel comprised of Photographer members Adam Shaw, Sarah Hogan and Assisting member Ira Giorgetti as they share their insights and experience as assistants, and why they see it as the perfect route into the industry.

Adam Shaw
Adam Shaw is a freelance photographer based out of his studio in Leicestershire. A Cumbrian who studied photography at Nottingham Trent University at the end of the 90s, he first entered the industry working as a photography studio co-ordinator for a global manufacturer and then moved to an in-house position with a retail design agency. Years spent working on high volume catalogue productions and for high street retailers gave him the experience and tools to transition to a successful freelance career.
Adam has since worked internationally and across the UK producing authentic, conscientious work for a wide range of organisations and businesses.
He is drawn toward working alongside everyday people and communities to help them tell their stories and share their loves. It's one of the ways he can play a part in challenging prejudice and discrimination.
A dam is a Member Director on the AOP Board and Chair of the AOP Education Working Group.
Ira Giorgetti
I am a photographer, entrepreneur and proud queer immigrant of colour. I love to shoot striking, dynamic and joyful photos that celebrate diversity, culture, gender and all the beautiful intersections in between.
Originally from the Philippines, I came to London in 2016 to chase my dreams, create a better life and tell the stories I’ve always wanted to tell. It’s been a bumpy road with a lot of twists and turns but I’m grateful for all the opportunities and good luck!
Being a Board member is an opportunity that will genuinely help me give back to the photographic community and show both new and long-standing members that being an outsider is something worth celebrating. I relish the chance to represent the views of younger, up and coming and underrepresented talent in a quickly evolving space that's ripe for change and modernisation.
I truly believe the world we live in has so many wild and wonderful stories just waiting to see the light, and I can only hope that my contributions might serve as an example to everyone out there who don’t think there’s a place for their stories, their creativity or their vision.
with guests,
