This master class will provide participants with an in-depth understanding of NFPA 855, NFPA 68, NFPA 69, and NFPA 70, including the “why” behind key requirements and the broader context surrounding risk and mitigation strategies for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
The course will address both prescriptive and performance-based aspects of these standards and is designed for a wide range of industry professionals, including engineers, insurance professionals, fire service personnel, Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), manufacturers, and others involved in BESS design, installation, evaluation, and safety.
Attendees should have a basic understanding of energy storage systems and associated safety concepts. The course will also feature new modules covering the application of NFPA 70 to BESS, plume modeling, and community risk assessment.
Instruction will be led by hand-selected industry experts with specialized expertise in each topic area, providing participants with practical insights grounded in real-world experience.
The course will cover specific topics such as:
- 2026 NFPA 855 - New Requirements & Concepts
- Large Scale Fire Testing
- UL 9540/9540A
- NFPA 68/NFPA 69 (Prescriptive/Performance Based, Partial Volume Deflagrations, Design Approaches, Modeling, Fundamentals)
- NFPA 70 (Application to BESS)
- Fire Suppression/Detection
- Hazard Mitigation Analysis
- Emergency Response
- Plume Modeling and Community Risk
