"Come and join us on a very long walk!" by Tom Fremantle

Not long ago author, adventurer (and out of shape hobbit), Tom Fremantle, clocked up 11,232 miles, 25 countries, 18 pairs of shoes and seven lost toenails, on a quest to walk around the world. He pushed all his belongings in a hiking trailer called KOKO (Keep On Keeping On!)

This talk will cover the first 3000 miles of his journey - a coast to coast yomp across America (with a warm up in Mexico’s Chihuahua Desert) followed by a brief trek through Ireland, Wales and into the heart of England.

Come and hear tales of coyotes and tarantulas; sun, snow and sandstorms; but most importantly of all the extraordinary people he met on the way - soldiers and street preachers, rodeo riders and reformed Klansmen, sage hobos and crack-shot cowgirls, magic-mushroom chewing chefs and countless cops. Not forgetting angels, aliens and everyone in between.

This is a two-legged Odyssey through a USA in a state of flux, a land full of fear, guns and rattlesnakes yet brimming with big-hearted strangers. Finishing up in the English village where he was born, Tom Fremantle saw both America and his “home” through fresh eyes.

Copies of Tom’s book, Travels with KOKO—A 3000 mile Walk Home Across America, will be available to buy, a slice of which will go towards funds for wonderful local charity, Autism Early Support. Thanks to the generosity of so many people on the road Tom’s walk raised over £45,000 for a variety of great causes including Autism Early Support, the Alzheimer’s Society and Hopefull, delivering vital humanitarian aid in war-torn Ukraine.
