A morning visit to Cerney House Gardens, North Cerney, Cirencester, Gloucestershire GL7 7BX
Cerney House Gardens are described by Country Living as “what most people aspire to in their gardens – and few achieve”. Part of the home of the Angus family, they are set around a Victorian walled garden, developed over the years by the late Lady Angus and her daughter Barbara “with a lot of help from nature itself”. Their organic approach encourages many varieties of butterflies and bees, with colourful herbaceous borders packed with old-fashioned perrenials and surrounded by roses and companion climbers. There is a working Kitchen Garden and herb garden as well as a new nature trail walk. There are also walks through the wild flower bank and the woodlands, which form part of 40 acres of Cotswold parkland.
Tea, coffee and home-made cake will be served at the end of the visit.
We will then head to the nearby Arts & Crafts gardens at Cotswold Farm, just 5 miles away.
Cotswold Farm, Duntisbourne Abbots, Cirencester, Gloucestershire GL7 7JS @ 2pm
Arts & Crafts Cotswold Farm house, designed by renowned architect-craftsmen Sidney Barnsley and Norman Jewson, was home to the Birchall family for five generations. The wonderful Arts and Crafts garden itself was designed by Norman Jewson in the 1920s. There are a series of terraced gardens, staring on the top terrace, with Magnolia grandiflora and yew hedges, with beautiful views down the valley. The Jewson Terrace is laid out with geometric beds and a rectangular lily pond in the centre and this leads on to the Shrub Garden which boasts a magnificent ‘Shirotae’ cherry at each end. Topiary, a bog garden, knot garden and much more wait be explored, together with stunning views across the Marlborough Valley.
We will return to the Main Lawn for afternoon tea and cake, which can be enjoyed in the shade of the magnificent ancient Prunus serrula.
