A Holistic Approach to Supporting the Young Rider - from a physical and psychological perspective

Wed 1 Apr 2026 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM East Stratton Village Hall, Church Bank Rd, Winchester SO21 3DU, SO22 4NR

One day interactive workshop aimed at coaches and parents of young riders (children & teenagers), to help them get the most out of their riding either as a leisure or competitive rider.

Have you ever wanted to support your child(ren) more than you can but not known really where to start? Or just started treating teenagers like small adults because they're not children anymore....but they're not really adults either? Or felt unsure about how a busy ambitious rider can balance all the demands of the sport, alongside school, friends, other hobbies and still having time to breathe!?

Whether you're a coach or a parent, we all want the best for our children, and those we coach, and armed with information is the best way that we can do that for our children and teenagers.

With talks by expert presenters, and plenty of time for discussions and interactive opportunities, as well as lunch and all refreshments included, this is a day that anyone coaching or supporting a child in equestrian sports should attend (non-horsey parents are very much welcome too - there is no need for any prerequisite knowledge!!)

Topics Include:

Physical elements:

  1. Coaching the growing body; understanding how physical development impacts the young rider in the saddle
  2. Growing pains; Recognising growing pains and how this can look in the saddle
  3. Young Rider Fatigue & recovery; exploring how the young rider’s body deals with fatigue and why recovery time is so important

Psychological elements:

  1. Coaching the developing Brain: Understanding how cognitive and emotional development impacts focus, communication & learning
  2. Motivation and mood through growth: Recognising how hormonal and physical changes influence confidence, consistency and drive
  3. Mental Fatigue and Recovery: Exploring how growth, school and training demands affect mental energy and strategies to promote psychological rest.
