The tour will start with a provided lunch and brief introduction. 

Tour Safety Information:

• NSBS will provide most of the necessary PPE (hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, fire resistant jacket, gloves)
• Participants must wear all PPE and:
  • Steel toed shoes (NSBS has some extras)
  • Long pants
  • Long hair must be tucked inside jacket or inside helmet
• The tour is about 1 mile long, and will involve going up and down stairways
• Some of the walkways, while very well protected, are at heights with “see through” graded flooring
• Other safety instructions will be given before the tour begins.

About NSBS:

Construction began on the facility in June 1995. The EAF and Caster were commissioned in November 1996 and the Hot Strip began operations in March 1997. The facility was originally designed to make 1.56 million tons of hot roll band steel. With completion of an expansion project that started in 2019, the facility is now producing over 2.6 million tons of hot band with 550 employees. 

The company began as a 50/50 joint venture between Cargill, Inc. and BHP Steel. At that time, Cargill owned 8 North Star Steel facilities. BHP Steel was part of a larger organization that also was in the mining, minerals and petroleum businesses. The Steel Division spun out of BHP in 2003 and formed BlueScope Steel. In October 2015, BlueScope bought the Cargill’s 50% stake and now are 100% owners of the business. BlueScope in headquartered in Melbourne, Australia.
