Building Foundations for Life through Baby Week - Celebrating 10 years!

Baby Week was a huge success as is celebrated from the 14 - 20 November each year.  Leeds began the initiative in 2016 with over 100 events across the city and thousands of attendees to attend.  Babies who have the best possible start in life will be more likely to benefit from successful futures. Child Friendly Leeds help launched the initiative and have been a founding partner since the very start, along with Leeds NHS, Maternity Services, Third Sector and more.

Fast-forward 10 years, Baby Week is now

celebrated in 14 regions across the UK and we're inviting you to join us on this journey!

There will be presentations as well as Q&A sessions delivered by colleagues around the objectives of Baby Week:

  • A partnership approach to working with maternity, health, education and early years
  • Understanding how your family hubs offer can be excelled and supported through Baby Week
  • Positive engagement with expectant and new parents
  • Sharing best practice amongst professionals working with parents and parents to be
  • Increasing awareness of the critical 1001 days and child development
  • Working in collaboration: (hearing from other cities who started Baby Week)
  • Toolkit to launch your own Baby Week and the benefits it has had in Leeds

Who’s involved in Baby Week?

Partners from all sectors such as Maternity Services and NHS community settings, Mental Health Services, Local Authority partners, Private sector and voluntary partners and parent led groups. From the NSPCC to Baby Buddy, Mumbler to Parent Infant Foundation, we have had the support from national partners to promote and join Baby Week! Whether you are a local authority from children and family services or public health, or want to look at regional partnerships via ICB or community health care, and family hubs, we have a range of partners who have already started the journey and seen the benefit Baby Week has in promoting the best start, increasing engagement with families and bringing sectors together.

Since the launch in Leeds in 2016, Baby Week  in November has taken place and has been celebrated in:

  • Leeds
  • Bradford
  • Calderdale
  • Cheshire & Merseyside
  • Coventry
  • Durham
  • Newcastle
  • Nottinghamshire
  • Buckinghamshire
  • Hull
  • York
  • Sunderland
  • Torbay
  • Redcar & Cleveland

Does it cost?

Baby Week was awarded with initial funding in the first year, since then every year, through the power of communication and connections, the week itself runs on a low cost budget with volunteers and partners encouraging the city to run taster sessions and promote their services. All you need is the right people with passion working in early years or health settings to lead the week in your city. We can then advertise on our website and provide the toolkit to run the same model in your city. To take part in a Baby Week, there is a one off small start-up cost to get you on the website, support you and your colleagues and get your logo designed before you can join the national steering group!

When does it take place?

Baby Week will now take place annually from the 14 – 20 November. It ends with a big finale marking World Children’s Day.

How can I find out more?

We’re inviting all partners across the UK to joi

n us for a webinar on Thursday 10 April from 12noon - 1pm.

This event will provide an overview of Baby Week Leeds and the innovative approaches that have been developed in Leeds to give every child the best start. It will share the story of how Baby Week came to Leeds from Brazil (Semana Do Bebe) and is currently supported by UNICEF there. It will then explore how sectors have worked together including maternity, early years and specialist services to engage with professionals and families and support the best start. The event will also look at how the week was used to work with communities and groups such as migrant networks, teen parents to increase awareness and access to supportive services which led to enable positive development during pregnancy and early childhood.

Agenda to be shared soon.
