Finding Your Voice on Guitar: Flatpicking, Melody & Songcraft

This hands-on session will explore flatpicking guitar techniques, finding and shaping melodies, and building confidence playing up the neck. West will also dive into songwriting—how to find inspiration and develop ideas into songs that feel grounded, personal, and uniquely your own.

A Pacific Northwest native, West is a multi-instrumentalist and creator of sonic spaces, blending bluegrass, old-time, and country traditions. His music weaves melody, rhythm, and lyrical storytelling into inviting sound worlds that draw listeners in. He has collaborated with leading figures in contemporary roots music, including Bill Frisell, Andrew Marlin, John Reischman, and Julie Fowlis.

“West’s touch is light, nimble, and beautifully fluid, without a hard edge in sight… combining the concision of old-time with the far-ranging improvisation of newgrass.”
