Description

As a liberatory event, this symposium centers the experiences of community members, social workers, and related professionals belonging to an affinity group.  As such, this event is open to members and potential members of the National Association of Black Social Workers. Please visit our website for membership eligibility criteria. 

The Baltimore Legacy Chapter, Association of Black Social Workers, in collaboration with CLLCTIVLY, invites you to the 2nd Annual African-Centered Social Work Symposium!  With this year's event, we set our sights on the liberation of African people in social work practice.  

This year's theme is "Reimagining Liberation!", and we will be FULLY VIRTUAL!!!

AGENDA:

9:00 am - Welcome, Spiritual Awakening & Libation

9:20 am - Opening Commentary on the Liberation of African-Descended People

  • Dr. Joann Martin, Founder, National Great Blacks in Wax Museum and author of several African-Centered social work publications, including "Spirituality & The Black Helping Tradition in Social Work"  

 9:30 am - Keynote Speaker Introduction and Address

  • "Breaking the Black Omnipresent Anti-Black Trauma Trance".  Dr. Cleo Manago,  Curator, AmASSI Center for Black Wellness and Culture

10:30 am - Morning Concurrent Workshops:

  • WORKSHOP 1: Using the NABSW Code of Ethics to Liberate Your Practice.   Amanda Morgan, LCSW-C, MSW Practicum Director, Chamberlain University & Doctoral Student, Howard University School of Social Work & Melissa Haley, MSW, LMSW, National President, National Association of Black Social Workers. This workshop provides 1.5 CEUs towards the BSWE Maryland Ethics requirement.
  • WORKSHOP 2:  The Power of Learning: Leveraging Research for Liberation & Advancement.  Mama Geri Lynn Peak, Chief Insight Facilitator, Two Gems Consulting
  • WORKSHOP 3:  African-Centered Play Therapy. NaShey Ingram, LCSW-C , RPT-S, Registered Play Therapist and Play Supervisor. Owner, Playful Minds Therapy

  • WORKSHOP 4: The Ethics of Mediocrity: Am I Really Showing Up for My People?  Amanda Morgan, LCSW-C, MSW Practicum Director, Chamberlain University & Doctoral Student, Howard University School of Social Work. This workshop provides 1.5 CEUs towards the BSWE Maryland Ethics requirement.

This is an IN-PERSON event.  The organizers support the health and wellness of all participants.  Masking, although at the discretion of the participant, is strongly encouraged.  The venue will practice social distancing as much as is feasible. Continuing Education: Baltimore Legacy ABSW, as an affiliate of the National Association of Black Social Workers, is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education programs and maintains full responsibility for this program. This training qualifies for 6 Category I continuing education units (CEUs) for social workers and professional counselors, including 3 Category I CEUs in Ethics.
