One English gentleman with more money than sense.

One mutinous chambermaid seeking a life of luxury.

One unsuspecting audience member. What can possibly go wrong?

The Revolting Maid is a new award-winning English translation
of Pergolesi’s classic domestic farce La serva padrona.

Wily chambermaid Medusa has had enough of her pompous and overbearing master, Sir Hubert. So she comes up with a masterplan: trick him into marrying her, so that she can take over the household and live a life of luxury on her own terms.
Directed by internationally acclaimed baroque specialist Sophie Daneman, and performed by rising stars Theano Papadaki and George Robarts, this high-tempo one-hour comedy is "entertaining, intelligible, and endlessly witty" (Michael Chance).
George Robarts's new English libretto won the John Dryden Translation Prize, and the production has been generously supported by the City Music Foundation and the Rosemary Joyce Suggate Trust.

Sophie Daneman (Director) is an internationally acclaimed soprano and stage director, and a leading exponent of baroque music. Directing credits include Rameau’s Maître à Danser (Théâtre de Caen, BAM Brooklyn, Bolshoi Moscow, Seoul Arts Centre); Monteverdi's L'Orfeo (Apollo's Fire, Cleveland); Dido and Aeneas
(Les Arts Florissants); Chasing Rainbows with Ensemble Jupiter and Lea Desandre (Rouen Opera, Opéra Comique, La Cité Bleue Geneva, Bozar Brussels). As associate to Antony McDonald: The Rake’s Progress (Grange/Fribourg) and Albert Herring (ENO). As a singer, she has worked extensively with Les Arts Florissants, and has appeared at Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw, the Schubertiades at Schwarzenberg and Hohenems, and the Salzburg Festival.

George Robarts (Sir Hubert & Translator) won the Kurt Weill Foundation’s 2025 Lotte Lenya Competition in New York, praised as a “phenomenal actor” with “impeccable delivery”. Highlights include The Gondoliers with English Touring Opera (“side-splitting” – The Guardian), The Fairy Queen at Longborough, Noël Coward songs in recital alongside Dame Felicity Lott, and principal and cover work at Garsington, the Grange, Buxton, and the Edinburgh Festival. He has given recitals with Graham Johnson at Oxford Lieder, Leeds Lieder, and the Luxembourg Philharmonie. He has translated Gluck's Orpheus & Eurydice for ETO and Mozart's Marriage of Figaro for Oxford Opera.

In 2027 she performs the title role in Rodelinda with the newly founded London Opera Ensemble. She opened the 2025 Edinburgh International Festival as a soloist with the Monteverdi Choir at Usher Hall, and returned in 2026 for Brahms’ Neue Liebeslieder at Queen’s Hall.
