Using Your Ears, online workshop (NBMP)
Want to develop your bat identification skills? Interested in understanding bat sounds?
This interactive online workshop will help you identify bats from their calls using a heterodyne bat detector. We will focus on pipistrelles, Daubenton's bats, noctule and serotine (the species monitored for the NBMP Field and NBMP Waterway Surveys).
What you will learn
- using a heterodyne bat detector and finding the 'peak frequency'
- training your 'sonic memory'
- breaking bat sounds into four elements: repetition rate, rhythm, tonal quality, and pitch
- how and why these elements vary
- an overview of the National Bat Monitoring Programme (NBMP).
A good next step for those who have attended "Discover Your Local Bats" and "Waterside Echoes: be a bat detective" workshops (though no prior knowledge is necessary).

Optional “Identifying Bats in Flight” booklet can be ordered (£5/£2.50 concession), to arrive by post. This is a useful reference booklet (28 pages) for beginners which provides an introduction to different types of bat detectors and patterns of sound made by bats in the field.
