Poetry after dark at Hodge Hill

Join bat experts from the Bat Conservation Trust and former Birmingham Poet Laureate Jasmine Gardosi for an evening of creativity and night-time nature. 

We'll gather for light refreshments at Hodge Hill Church before being led by Jasmine in a poetry workshop inspired by nature after dark. For those who wish to join us, we'll go on a short walk to (hopefully!) watch bats and other night-time nature as part of a NightWatch survey together. You'll be welcome to share your creations in a short reading, before returning to Hodge Hill where the event will close. 

Timings (subject to change!) 

• 5:30pm - meet at Hodge Hill for some light refreshments and good conversation 
  
• 6:00pm - poetry workshop 
• 7:30pm - bat walk (optional) 
• 9:30pm - event finished at Hodge Hill Church 

Frequently Asked Questions 

What is a bat walk? We will go on a short walk and use bat detectors which tune into the ultrasonic calls of nearby bats. Hopefully we will have the chance to observe bats in their natural habitat, flying above us as they socialise and hunt for insects. The group will always stay together and maintain an easy pace. You will not be left behind. 

What happens in case of bad weather? Bats don't like to fly in low temperatures, heavy wind or rain. In case of bad weather, we will host the workshop indoors at the church and close the event a little early. There will still plenty of time to learn more about bats even if the weather is bad!

What do I need to wear and bring? You must dress for the weather (it can get chilly after dark!) and wear footwear suitable for uneven ground, such as comfortable trainers. Please bring a torch if you have one! 

Is this event accessible? Hodge Hill Church has wheelchair ramps through from car park into church and out into the church garden. There are wheelchair accessible bathrooms available at the church. The walk will be at a slow pace and include road walking, and walking on uneven surfaces. Can I come alone? Absolutely! This event is perfect to bring friends and family to, but you'll have just as good a time coming alone. We hope to encourage participants to chat and share their poems together, plus the event organisers are always happy to chat with you too. 

Can I bring my dog? Well-behaved dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times. Please consider your fellow participants who will appreciate some peace and quiet during the workshop!
