Sound and the Imagination - a storytelling masterclass with Debs Newbold

A one-off special event. Taking advantage of the expertise of the amazing Debs Newbold, Beeston Tales are delighted to be hosting this day long, unique training opportunity on Thursday 22nd October. Join us at The White Lion, Middle Street in Beeston, near to the tram and bus stops.

The words we use have more to them than their dictionary meaning. The sounds of words have magic, and that magic can be channelled in all sorts of different ways. Join Debs for a playful immersion in to the massive palette of sound that language gives us as storytellers, as moving bodies, and as human beings.

Drawing on 17 years’ experience speaking Shakespeare at Shakespeare’s Globe, 15 years as a performance storyteller and a lifetime as a writer-at-play Debs will use games, conversation, and even the sounds of our surroundings to deepen your connection with the music of the words you say and the images they conjure. You might even leave having done a bit of Shakespeare yourself!

This workshop is suitable for storytellers, writers and poets who are curious about their relationship with the sound of the spoken word. There will be active group exercises as well as quiet solo time and writing exercises also. If you for any reason do not like to write with paper and ink these exercises can be easily adapted to digital writing, speaking and voice recording to meet your needs in the workshop. Come ready to mess about!

We advise workshop participants to see Deb's performance, DAUNTLESS the day before the workshop.

The event will run from 10.30 am to around 1:30 pm.

Beeston Tales is a not-for-profit community organisation, with all proceeds from events going to support traditional storytelling in Beeston and the surrounding area.
