The 1854 Barrel honors the legend that the Jesuit fathers brought their distillation craft to Kentucky, laying the foundation for a cherished bourbon tradition. Crafted by Belen Jesuit alumni, this limited edition series celebrates the rich legacy of these early Jesuits—all profits to benefit the Fund for Belen.

In the mist-shrouded hills of 19th-century Kentucky, where the Ohio River whispered secrets to the bluegrass, Jesuit scholars ventured forth from their Bardstown home at St. Joseph’s College, a beacon of intellect amid the frontier’s ferment. Not mere missionaries, these dark-robed philosophers blended Ignatian spirituality with the alchemy of the land. Near Clermont’s bourbon-kissed soils, the birthplace to the precursors of the amber nectar we now call Knob Creek, they pondered eternity over corn mash and oak. “If God is in the details,” one might quip, “then surely He’s aging in these barrels.” Crafted in Kentucky by our own alumni, each barrel is a tribute to the rich heritage those early Jesuits left behind.
