Foundations of Kinbaku is the second instalment of the …Kinbaku workshop series. It has been designed to build upon the knowledge gained during our Introducing Kinbaku workshop (or Wednesday Classes). This workshop will introduce some more structured elements, such as the TK, to prepare you and your partner for moving towards partials and suspensions in future workshops. We will have two main focal points; understanding the TK and playing with more complex floor shapes, both with technical and connective proficiency.
We will begin by revising some of the fundamental techniques you have learned in your previous workshops before looking towards understanding friction and what role it plays when creating structured harnesses, such as armbinder, antler tie, tengu etc. We will be paying close attention to the model experience throughout, exploring different types of rope bottoming and mindsets, pain management, body awareness and more.
Once we have developed this knowledge, we will turn our attention to the Takate Kote (TK), which is the first look at suspendable structures. The TK will form a basis upon which everything else is built and it is paramount that we form a deep understanding of its mechanics in order to create stable and sustainable shapes in the future.
Its not all technical, though! We mustn’t forget that the whole point of Kinbaku is to have fun, and thus, we will take some time to explore how we can apply the TK while we play on the floor. By introducing more complexity to your floor play we can open many doors for exploration and enjoyment.

What should I wear?
In short, whatever you are comfortable in.
To elaborate, many people prefer to attend workshops in yoga, dance, or sports attire. Jeans can feel a bit restrictive and might not be the best option. Its not uncommon to see those wishing to be tied wearing sundresses but this is absolutely not a requirement. We advise against clothing that has lots of zippers, large buttons, sequins etc as ropes can easily become caught on these.
What should I bring?
Ropes, you will need 6x approx. 8m Jute or hemp ropes. If you don’t have them, we have some that you can buy. We provide free tea, coffee, and some snacks but you should bring your own lunch and your own mug can be helpful. There is also a shop and a couple of takeaway options in the local area.
