Curator talk: Sargent and Fashion

Join us to hear Dr James Finch discuss the creation and thought behind the landmark John Singer Sargent exhibition, Sargent and Fashion. This exhibition - extended till July 7th - sheds new light on John Singer Sargent’s acclaimed works. It explores how he worked like a stylist to craft the image of the sitters he painted, who he often had close relationships with. Sargent used fashion as a powerful tool to express identity and personality. He regularly chose the outfits of his collaborators or manipulated their clothing, working as both stylist and artist. Book now to hear how Dr Finch and his colleagues orchestrated an exhibition of over 60 of Sargent’s paintings, many of which rarely travel, and sourced many of the original garments in which his sitter’s were painted.

Dr James Finch

Since 2019, Dr James Finch has been Assistant Curator, 19th Century British Art at Tate Britain. He has worked on several exhibitions and displays, most recently The Rossettis at Tate Britain along with Turner’s Modern World, William Blake, and Life Between Islands. Prior to joining Tate, James was Curatorial Assistant at the Royal Academy of Arts. His research on British art since 1800 has appeared in numerous publications.
