Sashiko Mending Workshop

This class is open to all levels and is an introduction to the Japanese Art of Sashiko Stitching. ‘Sashiko’ meaning ‘little stab’ is a beautiful way to mend, add strength to garments, utilize patching techniques as well as explore traditional patterns using a simple running stitch.

In this class you will:

• Start with a sample fabric in order to practice the basic running stitch
• Work with stencils in order to mark out a design onto a piece of cotton fabric
• Learn about the different materials and tools needed to carry on and practice this skill at home
• All materials from the session will be provided, plus you will leave with a sashiko kit that includes threads, needles and fabric swatches to continue your project at home
• Optional: to bring a garment from home that needs mending or repairing to be able to use in the workshop
• Please avoid bringing: woollen items, knitted garments, stretchy fabrics like swimwear, jersey t-shirts (these can be repaired in different ways)
• Good examples of items to bring are: a denim shirt, jeans, cotton or woven items like chino’s or trousers, shirts,and dresses

The workshop costs £55 per person.

Madeline Tanoto is a designer-maker, textile educator and founder of Mads Do & Mend CIC, with over 20 years' experience across fashion, textiles, design and education. She specialises in visible mending and creative repair, helping people build confidence in extending the life of their clothes through practical, sustainable skills.

Madeline creates welcoming, inclusive workshops that celebrate repair as both a creative practice and a way to connect with others. Through Mads Do & Mend CIC, she delivers community textile projects and mending programmes in partnership with organisations including CP Company, Lewisham Council, Southwark Council, Veolia and Fine Cell Work, alongside charities, housing associations and local community groups.

Her mission is simple: to empower individuals and communities to mend their clothes—and themselves—through craft, creativity and connection.

Reduced ticket prices

We’d like as many people as possible to be able to access and enjoy Bell House. We offer a limited number of income-based bursary tickets at half price, which can be booked directly - if you would not be able to attend at the full price due to financial considerations, then this concession option is available.
