BOOKBINDING: Accordion Sewn Spine Album

EXPERIENCE LEVEL – INTERMEDIATE

For those who have experience in case binding

Would you like to have go at bookbinding?

This session starts at 10.00 am and finishes at 4.30 pm. There is a chance of over-running so please allow some extra time at the end of the day.

Fancy making an early Christmas Present in our Print Room & Bindery?

Tania will refresh your fundamental skills in binding techniques, building on those you have used sewing sections in case binding.

You will learn the essentials of paper grain, bone folding, punching, French link stitching, tipping-on end papers, gluing and backing and finally making the hard cover and casing in. We will be creating an accordion fold into which we will sew our album sections. This is to give you the extra depth required for an album. Once the book block is sewn and glued we will case into a hard cover and finally ‘tip on’ vellum paper on each page.

PLEASE NOTE that this workshop is suited to anyone who has attended one of Tania’s case binding workshops (or who has had similar experience). This workshop will be a challenge to complete in a day and is not suitable for those on the start of their binding journey.

All materials and equipment supplied, however please bring your own if you have something you want to use checking of course the grain direction is suitable for this project. Tania will have ready prepared all the materials you need trimmed to size for an efficient speed of working. *

This session is designed to equip you with skills that you can build on at future workshops and work on at home.

These workshops are held in the Bell House Print Room and Bindery where we will be using materials and equipment kindly donated to us from Dulwich College and The London Library. Space is limited so book fast. These are probably the smallest book binding classes ever! ONLY 3 places available for lots of one-to-one focus time.

You will most definitely be needing a break so either bring along a sarnie or we can refuel on some biccies for half an hour.

*PLEASE NOTE this workshop is unsuitable for under 16s and sharp equipment is used.

We’d like as many people as possible to be able to access and enjoy Bell House. We offer a limited number of income-based bursary tickets at half price, which can be booked directly - if you would not be able to attend at the full price due to financial considerations, then this concession option is available.
