Beginners Garment Making Weekend

Saturday 16th August 10am-4pm

Sunday 17th August 10am-4pm

Join us for a summer’s weekend at Bell House and learn the skills to start sewing your own clothes at home!

This course is suitable for complete beginners. Over the course of the weekend you will learn how to use a sewing machine and make a handy pin cushion, before progressing to sewing your own beautiful top!

What will be covered:

  • Using a sewing machine (don’t worry if you’ve never used one before!)
  • Taking measurements
  • Choosing the right fabrics for your project
  • Choosing patterns
  • Cutting out your pattern and fabric
  • Sewing a pin cushion and a garment

What will be provided:

  • Fabric for your pin cushion
  • A printed pattern for your garment
  • All equipment

What you will need to provide:

  • Fabric for your garment (between 1 - 2.6 metres, depending on size)
  • Matching thread
  • A packed lunch for both days!

How to prepare for the weekend:

We will email you in advance of the session with information regarding fabrics and sizing.

You will need to reply to let us know your size range so that we can print your pattern. You will also need to purchase your fabric and matching thread so that it’s ready to use in the first session.

About the pattern

The pattern we will be using for this course is the ‘Ashton Top’ by indie designer Helen’s Closet. This top is an ideal first sewing project as it covers sewing techniques such as darts, French seams and bias binding/facing.

Size range for the pattern is US 0-30 (equivalent to a UK 4-34).

If you’re not sure that this pattern is for you then get in touch and we can let you know about future workshops using different designs.

About the Tutor

event_description_image_158753_1753280709_0c258.jpg?_a=BAACd3DQ

Amy’s background is in community engagement, working on projects across London in schools, gardens, parks and historic houses. It’s no exaggeration to say that her life was changed back in 2020 when a friend taught her how to sew a simple top - a whole new world of creative fun opened up! From then on she’s been making her own clothes and dreaming up textiles projects to share with others.

There’s nothing Amy enjoys more than helping others to start their own sewing journey. It’s her belief that everyone just needs that one friend to sit with them, teach them the basics and then they’ll be off!
