Bookbinding: Secret Belgian Binding Workshop

Fri 16 Oct 2026 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM BST Bell House Print Room and Bindery, SE21 7BG

This session is designed to introduce you to an alternative and decorative form of bookbinding.

The Secret Belgian Binding (also known as the crisscross binding) is a unique, non-adhesive bookbinding technique. It was invented by Belgian bookbinder Anne Goy in 1986 and features a distinctive woven thread pattern across the spine which allows the book to lie completely flat when opened.

Key Characteristics

  • Flat Opening: because no glue is used on the spine, the pages open seamlessly, making it perfect for sketchbooks or journals.
  • Three-Piece Cover: unlike standard books, the cover consists of three distinct boards (front cover, back cover, and a loose spine piece).
  • Crisscross Stitch: the front and back covers are laced to the loose spine piece using a distinct woven-thread pattern, from which the binding gets its nickname.
  • The "Secret" Name: the nickname was coined by book artist Hedi Kyle, who popularised the style in the US but did not know the originator.

Experience level: intermediate, some experience would be an advantage. Cost including all materials £80

Your day will be led by Tania Hurt-Newton, the Creative Director of the Print Room & Bindery and a graphic designer, bookbinder and print maker.

Space is limited so book now. These are probably the smallest book binding classes ever! ONLY 4 places available for lots of one-to-one focus time.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Tania in advance by email: tania@bellhouse.co.uk

ALL MATERIALS INCLUDED. SOME EXPERIENCE WOULD BE AN ADVANTAGE.

PLEASE NOTE this workshop is unsuitable for under 16s and sharp equipment is used.

There is a chance of over-running so please allow some extra time at the end of the day. It’s a hands-on workshop not a fashion parade. You might get inky! And bring an extra layer as the basement can get chilly. You will most definitely be needing a break so either bring along a sarnie or we can refuel on some biccies for half an hour.

Due to the basement location of the Print Room and Bindery, we regret we cannot offer access to wheelchair users.

These workshops are held in the Bell House Lottery Room. We will be using materials and equipment kindly donated to us from Dulwich College, The London Library, The Heritage Lottery Fund and other kind donations.
