The Creative Arts Club: Art for All Make an Illuminated Letter – 2 Week Course

Join artist Sarah Wetherall for this short two-week course where you will learn the simple beautiful processes needed to make an illuminated letter.

Friday 30th October and Friday 6th November 10am – 1.00 pm

£90.00 total per person for the course.

The history of decorated lettering spans thousands of years, evolving from simple classical text highlights into the astonishing gilded masterpieces of the Middle Ages.

This introductory course will take you through the basic steps and traditional processes needed to make your own ornamental letter on a specially prepared wooden tile:

In the first week we will look at the tradition and design of illuminated lettering. You will take inspiration from the mediaeval masterpieces to design your own letter on high-quality watercolour paper. You will transfer the design onto a prepared wooden tile and then be shown how to decorate both the paper and the wooden initial with precious metal leaf.

In the second week we will look at paint made with egg yolks. An ancient traditional paint which pre-dates oils, egg tempera is eco-friendly, non-toxic, fun and easy to make. It yields luminously beautiful colours which last for centuries.

Complete your wooden tile with your own home-made paint and take home your own decorative masterpiece and some new transferrable skills!

No experience necessary – this course is for the absolute beginner as well as the more experienced arts and crafts practitioner.

All materials and refreshments will be provided.

About the Artists/Workshop Leader:

The session will be run by Sarah Wetherall, a local artist who has many years of experience running art workshops, activities and events for a range of diverse groups of all ages. She worked at Dulwich Picture Gallery for over 10 years – during her time there she developed a particular interest in the link between creativity, health and well-being. This lies at the heart of all her classes.
