Songs for A Body (Un)Becoming is a voice and cello duet by composer Aaron Gabriel and features Thomasina Petrus and Laura Sewell. The music is inspired by the process of Artistic Director Beth Graczyk and her dance duet with dancer and performer Leah Wilks which explores the tension between decay and transformation—where the body meets disintegrating materials through acts of touch, labor, and experimentation.

The music is built alongside and with processes that created the dance duet, reflects and expands on these themes and experiments with how instruments can create similar effects to the body.  The public sharing will combine scored music, music invented by the musicians and composers in workshops, and music improvised in the moment.

In the first iteration of A Body (Un)Becoming, the dancers worked with discarded substances such as eggshells and examined what new forms can emerge through pressure, heat, and attention. By animating overlooked materials including an aging female-identified human body, the work challenges fixed ideas of being and utility, proposing humanness as a permeable state—fragile, reforming, and ongoing.
