Continuing in the series of guest webinars hosted by Better Breastfeeding to support the development of local breastfeeding and infant feeding strategies, we will hear from First Steps Nutrition about how these strategies can best incorporate support for mothers and families with the introduction of solid foods.

Vicky Sibson and Rachel Childs will talk about supporting the introduction of solid foods to a baby’s diet and ensuring families have the best advice and a supportive environment to do so. They plan to cover:

  • Current public health recommendations on the introduction of solids
  • Challenges facing parents/carers
  • Evidence on what works to support complementary feeding
  • Creating an enabling environment

Presenters

Dr Vicky Sibson, Director, First Steps Nutrition Trust
Vicky is a public health nutritionist with 20 years professional experience working in infant and young child nutrition and feeding globally and in the UK. She has worked at First Steps since 2018 and been the director since 2021. She currently sits on the NICE committee updating the Maternal and Child Nutrition guidelines, and has fed in to/is feeding in to consultations relevant to the subject of this webinar, including the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition guidelines on feeding young children aged 1-5 years and OHID’s voluntary commercial baby food guidelines.

Rachel Childs, Nutritionist, First Steps Nutrition Trust
Rachel is a public health nutritionist and a trained primary school teacher. She has worked at First Steps since 2022 and leads our work on Healthy Start and policy/advocacy to address the effect of the cost of living crisis on young families. She is in the process of finalising our latest Eating Well guide, for supporting families living in resource poor settings, such as hotels and other temporary accommodation.
