British Horse Society Webinar Series 2026 with Janet L Jones PhD
We are delighted to announce the first of four webinars with Janet L Jones, PhD in 2026. Janet is a neuroscientist, horse-trainer, and author of “Horse Brain, Human Brain” and “A Horse's World: A Neuroscientist's Journey into the Equine Mind”, which will be published on 23 June 2026.

These webinars will each count as 1 CPD Point for BHS Accredited Professional Coaches.

The cost of attending each webinar is free for our BHS Welfare Volunteers.
(Please note these webinars will NOT be recorded)

4 February 2026, 7pm
“Training by Non-Edible Reward”
When used properly, non-edible reward is a more effective method of equine learning than negative reinforcement. This presentation explores the use and misuse of different rewards and varied timing in terms of their effects on the horse’s brain. The brain chemistry behind edible treats is especially sensitive and weakens the power of reward when used without precision.

18 February 2026, 7pm
“Equine Planning and Forethought: Yes or No?”
Did your horse plan to pee in that feed bucket, or was it a coincidence? The prefrontal cortex that allows us to strategize doesn’t even exist in the equine brain. We consider the implication of that fact and uncover the effects of our assumptions that horses think the way humans do.
(Please note this webinar will NOT be recorded)

11 November 2026, 7pm
“Calming the Anxious Horse”
Twelve hundred pounds of agile anxiety are not pleasant to work with. Learn how the equine brain is wired to emphasise fear and what you can do to calm it down. We’ll talk about identifying anxiety, managing it in the moment, and training it away using brain-based techniques of pathological calm, breathing routines, and redirected attention.
(Please note this webinar will NOT be recorded)

18 November 2026, 7pm
“Six Neurological Reasons Why Horses Excel as Assisted- Therapy Animals”
The biological nature of equine brains makes horses excellent for assisted therapy, whether physical or psychological. This topic explores the effects of equine body language, fear, learning, perception, and executive function on the horse’s unique ability to help human companions. Each is applied to specific therapeutic needs.

About Janet Jones, PhD

Dr Jones applies neuroscience to equine training and human-horse communication. She earned her Ph. D. from UCLA and taught neuroscience of perception, language, memory, and thought for 23 years.

Janet trained horses at a large stable early in her career and later ran a successful horse training business of her own. She has schooled hundreds of green or “difficult” horses, rides many breeds and disciplines, and has competed in hunter, jumper, halter, western riding, and reining. She employs the principles of basic dressage in all horse sports.

Janet’s 2020 book “Horse Brain, Human Brain” has been translated into eight languages, available in print, electronic, and audiobook form. It won Japan’s Equine Culture Award in 2021, the only time an American book was given that prize since Laura Hillenbrand won for Seabiscuit.

Janet’s new book
A Horse's World: A Neuroscientist's Journey into the Equine Mind” will be published on 23 June 2026.
