Big Ideas: Gemma Bass' Coltrane Reimagined

Big Ideas presents large ensemble jazz, improvised, & experimental music performed by a rotating lineup of musicians based across the North of England.
This year marks the centenary of one of the giants of jazz: John Coltrane. In this new project led by violinist, composer, and improviser Gemma Bass, Coltrane’s work is combined with folk and classical influences and performed by a unique ensemble of multi-genre improvisers.
Throughout his life Coltrane sought to expand horizons and open channels of communication through sound. Here, fragments of Coltrane’s music are stripped back and put through new creative processes, more like games than compositions. Upside down, back to front, layered up and thrown together, sometimes chaotic, sometimes beautiful. This is a fresh take on Coltrane’s music, but still with spontaneity, innovation, and communication always at the core.
