Bird of Dawn: A Century of Song and Struggle in Iran

Presented in collaboration with Highways Performance Space, Bird of Dawn: A Century of Song & Struggle in Iran is a multilingual folk musical that tells the story of Iranians’ ongoing struggle for a democratic society through over a hundred years of their protest songs. In a series of musical vignettes based on a rich repertoire of already existing protest music, both fictional and historical characters—namely rebel singers and songwriters—write, mash up, and remix these songs despite tremendous repression, exploring the changing meanings of freedom from both domestic authoritarianism and foreign imperialism across the generations, into the present day. Bringing together an all-star cast, this unprecedented theatrical storytelling event captures the desire to be free in us all, and how that desire weaves with the lives of our ancestors, descendants, and with kindred souls across borders. These days, as both a destructive war and continued state repression seek to plunge us into despair, we come together in grief, hope, and solidarity, knowing that music gives life to our freedom dreams.

نمایش «مرغ سحر: یک قرن ترانه و مبارزه در ایران» یک تئاتر موزیکال چندزبانه‌ از تلاش مداوم ایرانیان برای دستیابی به دموکراسی است که در خلال ترانه‌های اعتراضی ایرانیان در طول بیش از صد سال روایت می شود.

این نمایش، مجموعه‌ای از اپیزودهای موزیکال است که بر پایه‌ی گنجینه‌ای غنی از موسیقی اعتراضی موجود شکل گرفته است و در آن شخصیت‌هایی خیالی و تاریخی(به‌ویژه خوانندگان و ترانه‌سرایان دادخواه ) با وجود سرکوب‌های شدید، این ترانه‌ها را نوشته، بازآفرینی می‌کنند و در هم می‌آمیزند. آن‌ها در این مسیر، معنای "آزادی" را از گذشته تا به امروز کاوش می کنند، چه در مواجهه با استبداد داخلی و چه در برابر امپریالیسم خارجی.

این رویداد بی‌سابقه‌ی نمایشی، میل مشترک ما به آزادی را به تصویر می‌کشد و نشان می‌دهد که این میل چگونه با زندگی نیاکان، آیندگان، و هم‌سرنوشتان ما در سراسر مرزها درهم‌تنیده است. در روزگاری که جنگی ویرانگر و سرکوب مداوم داخلی می‌کوشند تا ما را به ورطه‌ی ناامیدی بکشانند، ما در اندوه، امید و همبستگی گرد هم می‌آییم، با این آگاهی که موسیقی به رویاهای آزادی ما جان می‌بخشد.
